Tobi Amusan Faces Mandatory Gender Test Ahead of 2025 World Athletics Championships

Starting September 1, 2025, World Athletics will require all female athletes, including Nigeria’s world record-holding sprint hurdler Tobi Amusan, to undergo a one-time genetic test to verify biological sex for the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo. The test, using a cheek swab or blood sample, will check for the SRY gene typically found on the Y chromosome.World Athletics President Sebastian Coe defended the policy, stating, “At the elite level, you must be biologically female to compete in the female category.
